Помимо своих основных значений слова junior (младший) и senior (старший) имеют много других значений. Давайте рассмотрим основные.
Junior
Junior происходит от латинского juvenis, с которым также напрямую связано происхождение слова juvenile (юный), которое относится к кому-то, кто младше другого. Оно также относится к молодому человеку, точнее, к сыну. Вплоть до 20 века к мальчику или юноше могли обращаться просто ‘Junior’ (хотя обычно это считалось несколько унизительным если было адресовано взрослому), а согласно традиции к имени ребенка, носящего имя своего отца, приписывали еще и аббревиатуру «Jr».
Junior также применяется к академическому статусу. В системе среднего образования или четырехлетнего колледжа junior – это учащийся третьего или четвертого курса обучения. Школы для студентов 7-9 классов 12-летней систему школьного образования называются “junior high schools.”
В качестве прилагательного junior означает и является синонимом “younger” (младше), “youthful” (молодой), “more recent” (недавний), “lower in rank” (младший по рангу). А фраза “junior varsity” означает спортивную команду университета или колледжа.
Senior
Что касается слова Senior, оно заимствовано непосредственно из латинского и означает «старший», но имеет более положительный оттенок чем слово “older”. Оно относится к кому-либо, кто старше другого или выше по рангу. Если студент попадает под категорию senior, значит, он выпускник.
Аббревиатура «Sr.», предшествующая мужскому имени, означает, что у этого человека есть сын с таким же именем.
В качестве прилагательного senior означает «старший» и относится к человеку, рожденному раньше другого человека (she is five years my senior), или старшего по званию, например, senior accountant, senior captain.
Senior также является синонимом «пожилой, почтенный» и имеет положительную окраску, например, “senior citizen” означает «почтенный гражданин», “senior center” (центр пожилых).
