В отличие от русского глагола «играть» не требует предлога для управления дополнением. Сравним:

С точки зрения подчинения правилам образования грамматических форм, то здесь следует отметить, что глагол to play принадлежит к числу правильных глаголов. Это, в свою очередь означает, что три основные формы, приведенные в таблице ниже, образованы согласно правилам:

Вторая и третья формы в данном случае получили окончание –ed. При этом следует учитывать, что буква «y» сохраняется при добавлении этого окончания, как и у всех глаголов, где «у» предшествует гласная. Если же перед «у» стоит согласная, то «у» превращается в «i» при добавлении окончания –ed (сравним: to try – tried-tried).
