Social etiquette in the UK
The British are famous for their language, sense of humour and, of course, politeness. So, when you are in the UK, make sure you respect the social etiquette in the following situations:
British people are quite reserved when greeting one another. A handshake is the most common form of greeting when you meet someone for the first time. It is only when you greet close friends or relatives that you would kiss them on the cheek or give them a hug. The British may also call you by many different affectionate names, such as dear, chuck, mate, guv, son or love. Do not be offended, this is quite normal.
The British like their privacy, so not all topics are safe for small talk. Avoid asking people about their
age, religion, politics, marital status, weight or how much they earn. Instead, acceptable small talk topics are family, films, television, sport, studies, food, hobbies and of course, the weather!
When you visit people at home, make sure you are on time. It’s also nice to take a gift for your hosts, such as a bottle of wine, a bunch of flowers or a box of chocolates. A British person might say «come and see me soon» or «drop-in anytime». However, you must always phone before you visit someone.

I think British people usually shake hands and say greeting words when they meet people for the first time. When they make a small talk they usually talk about safe topics, for example about weather. When British visit someone at home they take a small gifts for hosts, may be a box of chocolate.

Russians are very warm and hospitable people. Usually, they like meeting new people and their handshake is very strong. Russians like to show hospitality inviting new people to their homes. For every houseguest, Russians are ready to propose a load of food, drinks, jokes and a good conversation about everything. They are very generous hosts. But don’t be surprised or offended if Russians would talk about very personal topics with you, for example, about age, religion, politics, marital status and so on. They think only heart-to-heart talk can break the ice. You may take a small gift with you when visiting a Russian person, for example, a bottle of vine or a box of chocolate. But be sure the hosts will drink this vine and eat this chocolate with you together.
You may even think they don’t know about social etiquette. And you’ll be wrong. The reason is very simple. Every guest becomes as close as relative very soon. That’s the main rule of hospitality. And when you are going to leave your hosts, they will kiss you on both cheeks and give a tight hug.
Of course, there is a social etiquette but only for official meetings. Russians also can be quite reserved in greetings and be skilful in small talking about unimportant things. Especially you can see quite reserved people in big towns where everyone is too busy looking after ourselves. But if you saw such behaviour don’t think you really know Russians. They are much kinder and more hospitable.
Русские очень теплые и гостеприимные люди. Обычно они любят встречаться с новыми людьми, а их рукопожатие очень крепкое. Русские любят проявлять гостеприимство, приглашая новых людей к себе домой. Для каждого гостя россияне готовы предложить уйму еды, напитков, шуток, а также хорошую беседу обо всем. Они очень щедрые хозяева. Но не удивляйтесь и не обижайтесь, если русские будут говорить с вами на очень личные темы, например, о возрасте, религии, политике, семейном положении и так далее. Они думают, что только разговор по-душам может растопить лед. Идя в гости к русскому человеку, вы можете взять с собой небольшой подарок, например, бутылку вина или коробку шоколада. Но будьте уверены, что хозяева выпьют это вино и съедят этот шоколад вместе с вами.
Вы можете даже подумать, что они не знают о социальном этикете. И ошибетесь. Причина очень проста. Каждый гость очень скоро становится настолько близким как родственник. Это главное правило гостеприимства. А когда вы соберетесь покинуть своих хозяев, они расцелуют вас в обе щеки и крепко обнимут.
Конечно, есть социальный этикет, но только для официальных встреч. Русские также могут быть довольно сдержанными в приветствиях и умелыми в светской беседе о неважных вещах. Вы можете увидеть довольно сдержанных людей, особенно в крупных городах, где каждый погружен в собственные заботы. Но если вы видели такое поведение, не думайте, что вы действительно знаете русских. Они гораздо добрее и гостеприимнее.

my family have much traditions. we decorate the new year tree, my mother make biscuits at the new year eve and at 12: 00 pm we have party. it’s very good, but we have also much holidays. on my birthday we go to the cafe or my mother bake a cake and we celebrate my britday. usually, i invite my friends, but often i have party with my family. it’s very happy time. i like our traditions and my family very much.
