Why does PMI want to replace cigarettes?

Our entire R&D organization is focused on developing satisfying products that have the potential to be less harmful than cigarettes for adult smokers around the world.
While not risk-free, we believe that our breakthrough smoke-free products have the potential to present less risk of harm than continued smoking—but the best choice is to quit or not to start smoking.
We have set high standards for ourselves, and have put in place a rigorous scientific assessment program for our smoke-free products.
Studies on our IQOS heated tobacco products are progressing rapidly, and the results are encouraging.
What are PMI’s new products?
Our portfolio currently consists of four smoke-free products. PMI’s smoke-free products are now available in 70 markets.
Our most advanced smoke-free product is the IQOS tobacco heating system, which releases nicotine and flavors without combustion. Because the tobacco is heated and not burned, the average levels of harmful chemicals are significantly reduced compared to cigarette smoke*. This is also true for our second heated tobacco product in development, TEEPS.
Our products without tobacco produce a nicotine-containing vapor. IQOS VEEV is our e-vapor product, with a heating technology that represents a new approach to vapor generation. Our other product without tobacco that is currently under development is STEEM, which generates a flavorful nicotine-containing vapor in the form of a nicotine salt.
*Importantly, none of our smoke-free products are risk-free and they deliver nicotine, which is addictive. The best choice is always to quit tobacco and nicotine altogether. However, for those adults who do not quit, switching to a smoke-free alternative represents a better choice than continuing to smoke.
What is IQOS?
IQOS is PMI’s brand of smoke-free products, including tobacco heating systems and e-vapor products.
IQOS tobacco heating systems heat specially designed heated tobacco units, without combustion, fire, ash, or smoke. This generates a flavorful nicotine-containing vapor, releasing the true taste of heated tobacco. The experience lasts about six minutes or 14 puffs, comparable to that of a cigarette.
Since there is no burning, the levels of harmful chemicals are significantly reduced compared to cigarette smoke. Our studies on IQOS heated tobacco products are progressing rapidly and indicate that it has the potential to present less risk of harm compared to continued smoking for adult smokers who switch to it completely instead of continuing to smoke. However, IQOS products are not risk-free and deliver nicotine, which is addictive.
Where can I use IQOS?
There is no global standard on where consumers can enjoy smoke-free products such as IQOS heated tobacco products or IQOS VEEV e-vapor products.
Check your local regulations about this emerging category of products. Public premises may also have their own rules on using or prohibiting use of smoke-free products. If the use of IQOS products use indoors is not prohibited either by law or by the premises operator, consumers should exercise commonsense with respect to where and around whom they use such devices
What does IQOS mean?
IQOS is not and never was an acronym. It is Philip Morris International’s brand name for its portfolio of heated tobacco and e-vapor products. The name was created to denote innovation and game-changing technology coupled with advanced science, and a name that we could protect and use in many markets.
Although many third parties have falsely attributed acronyms to what “IQOS” means, none of these ideas are correct.
What is IQOS ILUMA?
IQOS ILUMA is our latest generation of heated tobacco product (HTP) and a new addition to our smoke-free products portfolio.
Launched in 2021, it combines innovative technology that works with PMI’s SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM TM that heats the tobacco from within. This technology is different from our original IQOS blade HTP devices (e.g., IQOS, IQOS 2.4, IQOS 2.4+, IQOS 3, IQOS 3 Duo, and IQOS 3 Multi). However, both blade and induction devices generate nicotine-containing vapor, releasing the taste of tobacco without combustion, and therefore without burning or emitting smoke.
HEETS or HEATSTICKS units can only be used with the original IQOS blade heated tobacco holders and cannot be used with IQOS ILUMA.
This technology requires additional information for consumers that is provided on our IQOS website and in our product warnings.
What are HEETS and HeatSticks?
HEETS, also known as HeatSticks in some markets, is a specially designed heated tobacco unit that contains tobacco and is intended for exclusive use with the earlier versions of the IQOS heated tobacco holder that uses “blade” technology (IQOS, IQOS 2.4, IQOS 2.4+, IQOS 3, IQOS 3 Duo, and IQOS 3 Multi).
They are made up of elements that include a tobacco plug, hollow acetate tube, polymer-film filter, cellulose-acetate mouthpiece filter, and outer and mouth-end papers.
The consumer inserts a HEETS into the IQOS blade holder, where it is heated without combustion. The consumer can then draw on it to enjoy the taste of heated tobacco. HEETS contain nicotine which is addictive and not risk-free.
HEETS are not compatible with the new induction heated tobacco product, IQOS ILUMA, which has its own specially designed tobacco units called TEREA SMARTCORE STICKS™.
What is IQOS VEEV?
IQOS VEEV is our next-generation e-vapor product that uses a new approach to vapor generation. Unlike IQOS heated tobacco products, IQOS VEEV uses IQOS VEEV MESH heating technology—a metallic mesh with tiny holes to heat e-liquid in a pre-filled, pre-sealed pod (called VEEV). Along with pharmaceutical-grade nicotine, VEEV e-liquids also contain food-grade flavorings.
VEEV pods are manufactured, assembled, pre-filled, and pre-sealed in our European production facilities. IQOS VEEV also features puff-activated heating and a low-liquid-level detection system that ensures the consistency and quality of the vapor generated and inhaled.
What is TEEPS?
TEEPS is one of our heated tobacco products. It is carbon-heated and has a look and feel comparable to a cigarette, but it is not a cigarette.
The carbon heat source at the end of TEEPS, using patented HeatControl Technology, is ignited, which transfers heat to a uniquely processed tobacco plug.
The consumer puffs on TEEPS to inhale a flavorful nicotine-containing vapor until the end of the experience. The patented design of TEEPS prevents tobacco from burning.
What is STEEM?
It is inspired by a technology acquired in 2011 from Professor Jed Rose of Duke University and his co-inventors. Professor Rose is one of the world’s leading experts on nicotine and smoking.
Our scientists continued to develop this technology and STEEM now generates a flavorful nicotine-containing vapor in the form of a nicotine salt.
When a consumer draws on the mouthpiece, a chemical reaction between nicotine (a weak base) and a weak organic acid takes place to produce a vapor containing nicotine salt.
What are reduced-risk products?
Reduced-Risk Products (“RRPs”) is the term PMI uses to refer to products that present, are likely to present, or have the potential to present less risk of harm to smokers who switch to these products versus continued smoking.
PMI has a range of RRPs in various stages of development, scientific assessment, and commercialization. Because our RRPs do not burn tobacco, they produce far lower quantities of harmful and potentially harmful compounds than those found in cigarette smoke.
What is an e-cigarette?
E-cigarettes, also called electronic cigarettes, are a popular smoke-free category of products without tobacco.
These battery-powered devices vaporize a liquid solution, also known as an e-liquid, containing nicotine and/or flavors.
One of the problems typically associated with e-cigarettes is the lack of quality control and automation throughout the manufacturing process. Unlike typical e-cigarette cartridges, our IQOS VEEV pods are manufactured, assembled, pre-filled, and pre-sealed in a fully automated process in our European production facilities.
Vaping is the term typically used to describe inhaling an aerosol (vapor) from an e-cigarette.

What is vaping?
Vaping typically describes the use of a smoke-free product that forms a vapor that is inhaled by a consumer. Examples of such products are e-cigarettes.
We have found several ways to produce a flavorful nicotine-containing vapor that a consumer can inhale, but that have significantly lower levels of harmful chemicals than cigarettes. These products contain nicotine, which is addictive, and are not risk free.
What is the difference between vaping and smoking?
The difference between vaping and smoking lies in the characteristics of the aerosol that’s inhaled.
When smoking a cigarette, the consumer inhales the smoke that’s produced through the process of burning tobacco.
The term vaping, however, describes the use of a smoke-free product (e.g. e-cigarettes) that forms a vapor that is inhaled by a consumer.
PMI’s scientists have developed several ways to produce a flavorful nicotine-containing vapor without burning that a consumer can inhale. This produces significantly lower levels of harmful chemicals than cigarettes. However, these products provide nicotine, which is addictive, and these products are not risk-free.

В результате выделяется дым, содержащий никотин и другие химические вещества. Первая продукция HNB появились в 1988 году, однако сначала не имела коммерческого успеха. Интерес к ней возник на фоне разочарованности электронными сигаретами, которые не могли обеспечить желаемый эффект от затяжки. В настоящее время системы нагревания табака выпускаются крупными табачными производителями.
Хотя табачные компании утверждают, что HNB безопаснее обычных сигарет, достоверных и надежных научных данных в пользу этого нет. Проверка на вшивость
iQOS состоит из зарядного устройства размером с телефон и держателя, напоминающего шариковую ручку. В него вставляется табачный стик, который затем нагревается до температуры 350 градусов Цельсия. В ходе исследования ученые приобрели четыре комплекта iQOS, которые отвечали требованиям качества. Они также закупили стики Marlboro того же производителя. Перепады давления во время каждой затяжки определены с помощью перистальтического насоса, соединенного с U-образным водяным манометром. Аэрозоли улавливали в стеклянные кюветы, которые вставляли в спектрофотометр и облучали светом с длиной волны 420 нанометров.
Были протестированы пять режимов эксплуатации. В течение двухсекундной или 4-секундной затяжки создавался объемный расход воздуха 7 миллилитров в секунду, в обоих случаях всего было сделано 14 затяжек. В случае с шестью двухсекундными затяжками объемный расход достигал 17,5 миллилитра в секунду, а при 12 затяжках той же продолжительности — 27,5 миллилитра в секунду. Наконец, пятый режим напоминал четвертый, но очистка держателей производилась в соответствии с инструкциями.
Ученые оценивали состояние нагревательного элемента в держателе визуально с помощью микроскопа и фотоаппарата. Некоторые стики были разрезаны на части для оценки количества частиц, образующихся при пиролизе нагревателя и расплавления полимерной пленки в фильтрах. Газовая хроматография и масс-спектрометрия была проведена для оценки уровня аэрозолей.

Были также выявлены признаки обугливания в стиках, хотя регулярная очистка препятствовала увеличению площади обгорания. Кроме того, температура выделяемого аэрозоля была достаточной, чтобы расплавить фильтр, который в результате становится источником потенциально вредных веществ.
Результаты газовой хроматографии и масс-спектрометрии показали, что в фильтре содержатся лактид, ε-капролактон и 1,2-диацетин, которые используются при изготовлении пластика и не оказывают вредного воздействия. Однако также был обнаружен токсичный формальдегид циангидрин, применяемый для производства резины. Это соединение, попадая в организм, откладывается в печени, где расщепляется на формальдегид и цианид. Известно, что относительно низкие дозы вещества смертельны для мышей.
Исследователи полагают, что ограничение времени курения до шести минут заставит пользователей делать максимальное количество затяжек и уменьшать интервал между ними. В результате они будут подвергаться воздействию больших объемов аэрозоля. Несмотря на утверждение производителя, ученые не нашли подтверждения того, что система нагревания табака минимизирует количество потенциально опасных летучих вредных веществ, включая полициклические ароматические углеводороды и оксиды углерода и азота.
Экспертное мнение производителя
Официальный представитель компании «Филип Моррис Интернэшнл» в России рассказал «Ленте.ру», что «выводы авторов исследования, что полимерная пленка фильтра табачных стиков при нормальных условиях использования начинает плавиться и выделять химическое вещество» не соответствуют результатам исследований компании.
Так, полимерный фильтр не плавится во время потребления. При использовании табачных стиков с IQOS биополимерная пленка в фильтре твердеет, это нормальная реакция на температуру аэрозоля. Задерживаемые фильтром компоненты аэрозоля могут вызывать изменения его цвета, это тоже нормальный процесс.
Кроме того, затвердевание и изменение цвета фильтра не являются признаками выделения каких-либо химических веществ.
По словам представителя «Филип Моррис Интернэшнл» в России, полимерный фильтр в табачных стиках изготовлен из кукурузного крахмала. Вещество, обнаруженное авторами исследования, не используется ни на одном этапе производственного процесса. Оно не было выявлено и при анализе выделяемых веществ, проведенным учеными «Филип Моррис Интернэшнл» в реалистичных условиях использования и с применением методов измерения, аналогичных тем, что использовались авторами данного исследования.
Исследования в самых разнообразных режимах использования продукта не выявили рост содержания токсичных веществ. Кроме того, клинические исследования, в рамках которых участники могли использовать IQOS без ограничений, показали снижение воздействия вредных веществ на уровне около 95 процентов от снижения воздействия, наблюдаемого у курильщиков, которые вообще отказались от потребления табака на период исследования.
«Результаты научных исследований IQOS, которыми мы располагаем на сегодняшний день, в совокупности свидетельствуют, что IQOS потенциально менее вреден, чем обычные сигареты», — резюмировал представитель «Филип Моррис Интернэшнл».
